If you have any questions or concerns\, please do not hesitate to contact us. \nWe are very grateful your patronage and look forward to what promises to be a great event this fall! \nSincerely\, \nKIPCOR Staff \n  \n  \n********************************************************************************************************************************************************** \n\n\n\n\nThe Spring KIPCOR 2020 Peace Lecture Series will feature author\, speaker\, and journalist\, Sarah Smarsh\, who will present “Bridging the Cultural Divide in Difficult Times\,” on Thursday\, September 17\, 2020 at 7:00 pm\, in Memorial Hall at Bethel College\, North Newton.  Smarsh is the author of Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth\, an instant New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the National Book Award\, examines economic inequality through her upbringing among the working poor on a Kansas farm. This fundraiser is part of the 35th anniversary celebration for the Kansas Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (KIPCOR). \nSarah Smarsh is an author\, speaker\, and journalist who focuses on socioeconomic class and rural America. Her book Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth\, an instant New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the National Book Award\, examines economic inequality through her upbringing among the working poor on a Kansas farm. \nSarah has reported on socioeconomic class for The Guardian\, the New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Harper’s\, and many other publications. Heartland was named a “best of 2018” by NPR\, Fresh Air\, the Boston Globe\, Amazon\, Buzzfeed\, Barnes and Noble\, and Publishers Weekly. In addition to being short-listed for the National Book Award\, Heartland was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize\, the Lukas Prize\, the Indie Choice Award\, and an Audie Award for Smarsh’s reading of audiobook. Actor-producer Sarah Jessica Parker selected the title for the American Library Association’s Book Club Central. \nSarah is a regular political commentator in national media and has spoken internationally on poverty\, rural issues\, and cultural divides at venues ranging from small-town libraries to Sydney Opera House. Sarah was recently a Fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on Media\, Politics and Public Policy. In 2019\, Sarah released a podcast entitled The Homecomers\, which focuses on how a national blind spot toward rural and working-class America is driving misleading headlines\, broken politics\, and dangerous fissures in our social fabric. The podcast showcases stories of people who\, as residents or advocates\, remain committed to their complex\, embattled homes. \nBy ninth grade\, Sarah attended eight southern-Kansas schools\, ranging from a 2\,000-student high school to a two-room prairie schoolhouse. DESCRIPTION:We will fire up the projector on Sunday\, November 17 at 3:00 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium to screen the film\, “Dawnland.” \nABOUT THE FILM\n“My foster mother told me … she would save me from being Penobscot.” \nFor most of the 20th century\, government agents systematically forced Native American children from their homes and placed them with white families. As recently as the 1970’s\, one in four Native children nationwide were living in non-Native foster care\, adoptive homes\, or boarding schools. Many children experienced devastating emotional and physical harm by adults who mistreated them and tried to erase their cultural identity. \nNow\, for the first time\, they are being asked to share their stories. \nIn Maine\, a historic investigation—the first government-sanctioned truth and reconciliation commission (TRC) in the United States—begins a bold journey. For over two years\, Native and non-Native commissioners travel across Maine. They gather testimony and bear witness to the devastating impact of the state’s child welfare practices on families in Maliseet\, Micmac\, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal communities. Collectively\, these tribes make up the Wabanaki people. \nThe feature-length documentary Dawnland follows the TRC to contemporary Wabanaki communities to witness intimate\, sacred moments of truth-telling and healing. With exclusive access to this groundbreaking process and never-before-seen footage\, the film reveals the untold narrative of Indigenous child removal in the United States. \nThe TRC discovers that state power continues to be used to break up Wabanaki families\, threatening the very existence of the Wabanaki people. Can they right this wrong and turn around a broken child welfare system? Dawnland foregrounds the immense challenges that this commission faces as they work toward truth\, reconciliation\, and the survival of all Indigenous peoples. \nLiving at the easternmost edge of Turtle Island\, the Wabanaki people are the first to see the new day’s light. Formally the Director of Restorative Justice Programming at the JAGS Foundation\, Jasmyn completed their MA in Human Rights at the University College London. They received their BA in Anthropology from Skidmore College. Currently\, their main focus is on community mobilization and the integration of restorative practices into the City of Birmingham as the Deputy Director of the Office of Social Justice and Racial Equity.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in Krehbiel Auditorium on Sunday\, September 22\, at 7:00 PM to hear Palwasha Kakar\, who has dedicated her life to building peace and resolving conflict\, speak. \nHer presentation wraps up a week of events at Bethel and in the community as part of the annual National Campaign for Nonviolence\, and is free and open to the public. \nKakar is currently senior program officer for religion and inclusive societies at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP)\, based in Washington\, D.C. \nHer topic reflects areas in which she has given much of her time and energy over the last 15 years. \nKakar is the daughter of an Afghan father and American mother\, who were medical students in Seattle when she was born.  She chose to come to Bethel College in 1995 because it was the alma mater of her maternal grandmother\, the late Ruth Graber of Moundridge. \nKakar graduated from Bethel in 1999 with a B.A. in global studies and Bible and religion.  She also took advantage of the opportunity to gain practical skills in conflict mediation through the Kansas Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (KIPCOR).

Kakar is the senior program officer for religion and inclusive societies at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP). Kakar’s distinguished career began in Newton\, KS where she earned a degree in Religion and Global Studies from Bethel College\, and served as director of the Newton Peace Center (now Peace Connections). Kakar went on to earn a Masters degree focusing on gender\, politics and religion from Harvard University’s Divinity School. \n  \nKakar’s career has included significant engagement in Afghanistan\, impacting a wide range of peacebuilding initiatives. Before joining USIP\, Kakar\, an Afghan-American\, worked in Afghanistan with the Asia Foundation\, the United Nation Development Program\, World Bank Group\, Kabul University\, and the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit. While in the region\, Kakar specialized in peacebuilding initiatives related to religion\, gender\, security and local governance. \n  \nKakar has published research regarding women’s participation in local governance\, Pashtunwali-Afghan customary law\, Afghan women’s identity\, and social spaces in Afghanistan. Her research has taken her to Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Bangladesh\, Egypt\, Israel\, Palestine\, Jordan and Syria. \n

SUMMARY:Resident Mural Community Cookout and Raw Tools Demonstration; Film: Inside Peace
DESCRIPTION:Following an early evening cookout and presentation by the group Raw Tools\, we will move inside the church for a screening of the film\, “Inside Peace.” \nThis 57-minute documentary focuses on four convicted criminals whose pre-incarcerated lives were filled with violence and addiction.  During their time in prison\, these individuals attended a Peace Class and began a struggle to rebuild their lives from the inside out.  Thanks to the class and the support of people inside and outside prison\, these men began to discover and rely upon their own self-worth and inner strengths.  Their efforts were put to the ultimate test once they were released from prison and were faced with the same roadblocks and temptations that led them to prison in the first place. \n

RAWtools\, Inc. partners with communities in an effort to repurpose weapons for productive lifelong purpose. The materials from the weapon will be forged into new tools. DESCRIPTION:KIPCOR is joining with Peace Connections and  the Bethel College Office of Student Affairs to present a series of events for the 2019 Campaign Nonviolence National Week of Action. Please join us for these events! \nAll activities are free & open to the public     \nSunday Sept. 8 (3:00 PM) – “LOST ANGELS”\nKIPCOR Film Series – Krehbiel Auditorium\, Bethel College\, North Newton \nThis highly-acclaimed film examines the plight of the homeless through the eyes of eight individuals trying to make a life for themselves within their Los Angeles community of homelessness.  The filmmakers show how a descent into life on the streets is often accelerated by the criminalization of homeless people\, and changes within the mental health care system. Poverty is often overlooked as a symptom of violence.\nFollowing the film\, we invite you to stay to offer your comments and ask questions. Our post-film discussion will be led by James Wilson\, Executive Director of the New Hope Shelter in Newton; and by a member of the Wichita Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team. \n  \nMonday Sept. 16 (6:30 PM) – POVERTY SIMULATION – PEACE CONNECTIONS – Memorial Hall\, Bethel College\, North Newton \nFast-forward through a month in the life of a family living with low resources Participate in guided role play. Discuss realities and the violence of poverty. Be part of the solution! \n  \nWednesday Sept. 18 (2:00 PM) – RAW TOOLS PRESENTATION – Memorial Hall\, Bethel College Campus\, North Newton \nIn this presentation during Bethel College Service Day\, Raw Tools will do an interactive presentation. RAWtools\, Inc. partners with communities in an effort to repurpose weapons for productive lifelong purpose. The materials from the weapon will be forged into new tools. Each weapon will be connected to its new purpose\, creating a story that will travel with the new tool. \nStudents\, faculty\, staff\, and members of the public will have the opportunity to share stories of the impact of gun violence. Students will also have an opportunity to work with Raw Tools to create the garden tool and any unused parts will be made available to students to create art pieces. \n  \nThursday Sept. 19 (5:30 PM) – RESIDENT MURAL COMMUNITY COOKOUT & RAW TOOLS DEMO;   \n(7:00 PM) FILM “INSIDE PEACE” First Church of God\, Newton \nFollowing an early evening cookout and presentation by the group Raw Tools\, we will move inside the church for a screening of the film\, “Inside Peace.” \nThis 57-minute documentary focuses on four convicted criminals whose pre-incarcerated lives were filled with violence and addiction.  During their time in prison\, these individuals attended a Peace Class and began a struggle to rebuild their lives from the inside out.  Thanks to the class and the support of people inside and outside prison\, these men began to discover and rely upon their own self-worth and inner strengths.  Their efforts were put to the ultimate test once they were released from prison and were faced with the same roadblocks and temptations that led them to prison in the first place. \n  \nSunday Sept. 22 (7:00 PM) – PALWASHA KAKAR\, GUEST SPEAKER –  \nKrehbiel Auditorium in the Luyken Fine Arts Center\,  Bethel College\, North Newton \n“Women’s Role in Ending Violence and Building Peace: Reflections from Afghanistan and the U.S Institute of Peace” \nPalwasha L. Kakar is the senior program officer for religion and inclusive societies at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP). Kakar’s distinguished career began in Newton\, KS where she earned a degree in Religion and Global Studies from Bethel College\, and served as director of the Newton Peace Center (now Peace Connections). Kakar went on to earn a Masters degree focusing on gender\, politics and religion from Harvard University’s Divinity School. \nKakar’s career has included significant engagement in Afghanistan\, impacting a wide range of peacebuilding initiatives. Before joining USIP\, Kakar\, an Afghan-American\, worked in Afghanistan with the Asia Foundation\, the United Nation Development Program\, World Bank Group\, Kabul University\, and the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit. While in the region\, Kakar specialized in peacebuilding initiatives related to religion\, gender\, security and local governance. \nKakar has published research regarding women’s participation in local governance\, Pashtunwali-Afghan customary law\, Afghan women’s identity\, and social spaces in Afghanistan. DESCRIPTION:The new academic year is upon us\, and with it comes a fresh round of movies for the 2019-20 KIPCOR Film Series! \nWe will fire up the projector on Sunday\, September 8 at 3:00 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium to screen the film\, “Lost Angels: Skid Row is My Home.” This highly-acclaimed film examines the plight of the homeless through the eyes of eight individuals trying to make a life for themselves within their Los Angeles community of homelessness. The filmmakers show how a descent into life on the streets is often accelerated by the criminalization of homeless people\, and changes within the mental health care system. \nAs always\, we invite you to stay after the film for a provocative discussion. Our post-film discussion on September 8 will be led by James Wilson\, Executive Director of the New Hope Shelter in Newton; and by a member of the Wichita Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team. \n“Lost Angels: Skid Row is My Home” also serves as the first event in KIPCOR’s recognition of National Campaign Nonviolence Week of Action. SUMMARY:Restorative Reads:  A KIPCOR Summer Book Club
DESCRIPTION:KIPCOR presents three sessions of an online summer book club for people interested in restorative schools. \nThis is your opportunity to connect online with others interested in Restorative Schools in the state of Kansas\, to discuss current literature\, and to learn from each other. \nEach of the three sessions will be an online webinar discussion using zoom\, and each will be facilitated by members of the KIPCOR Restorative Schools Initiative training team.  Registered participants will receive log-in information in advance of each session. \nThe sessions are FREE for Kansas Restorative Schools Network members. For all other participants\, sessions are $10 each. \nEach discussion session will center on a focus text that gives background and support to the practice of restorative justice in schools.
