Her book Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth\, an instant New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the National Book Award\, examines economic inequality through her upbringing among the working poor on a Kansas farm. \nSarah has reported on socioeconomic class for The Guardian\, the New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Harper’s\, and many other publications.  Heartland was named a “best of 2018” by NPR\, Fresh Air\, the Boston Globe\, Amazon\, Buzzfeed\, Barnes and Noble\, and Publishers Weekly.  In addition to being short-listed for the National Book Award\, Heartland was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize\, the Lukas Prize\, the Indie Choice Award\, and an Audie Award for Smarsh’s reading of her audiobook.  Actor-producer Sarah Jessica Parker selected the title for the American Library Association’s Book Club Central. \nSarah is a regular political commentator in national media and has spoken internationally on poverty\, rural issues\, and cultural divides at venues ranging from small-town libraries to Sydney Opera House. Sarah was recently a Fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on Media\, Politics and Public Policy.  In 2019\, Sarah released a podcast entitled The Homecomers\, which focuses on how a national blind spot toward rural and working-class America is driving misleading headlines\, broken politics\, and dangerous fissures in our social fabric.  The podcast showcases stories of people who\, as residents or advocates\, remain committed to their complex\, embattled homes. \n  \nRegister NOW so that you will be included in the November 4 emailing of the Zoom link. \nRegister Now\n  \nAlthough this event is FREE\, it IS still a fundraiser.  In order to donate to KIPCOR for this\, or any other\, event\, please click below.  Choose the amount of your donation and then (and this is important)\, find the downward pointing arrow at the end of the phrase “Bethel College Fund (Current Fund)” and click on the arrow and SELECT KIPCOR FROM THE DROPDOWN MENU. \nDONATE NOW\n  \nIf you would like to order your own copy of Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth you can do so by going to the website of our local bookstore\,\nFaith and Life Bookstore\, HERE.\nBe sure to fill out the “comment” area of the purchase form with the name of the person to whom the book should be dedicated.  Faith and Life will place a bookplate with your dedication and Sarah’s signature in your book and have the book at the store for you to pick up or\, if you live out of the area\, ship the book to you.   The deadline for ordering books is Noon on the day of the event\, November 5\, 2020. \nPeople who order a book will be invited to a private\, exclusive “Question and Answer” zoom call with Sarah after the main event.  Invitations to this exclusive Q&A time will be sent in the early afternoon of November 5\, the day of the event.\n  \n  \nIf you would like to be a named sponsor for this event\, or would like to suggest a potential sponsor\, please contact KIPCOR Director\, Sheryl Wilson\, at (316) 284-5881\, or swilson@bethelks.edu. \n  \nThis event is co-sponsored by Faith and Life Bookstore and by KMUW. \n  \nSponsors \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:This film is postponed until Fall 2020. KIPCOR Film Series: Cooked: Survival by Zip Code
DESCRIPTION:Note that this film is postponed until Fall 2020.   \n  \nKIPCOR 2019-2020 Film Series Presents:  Cooked: Survival by Zip Code \nWe’ll fire up the KIPCOR projector again on Sunday\, April 19\, at 2:00 PM for our next film\, “Cooked:  Survival by Zip Code”. \nJoin us in Krehbiel Auditorium in the Luyken Fine Arts Center on the campus of Bethel College in North Newton as we watch the film and discuss it and its ramifications with Dr. Christy Miller Hesed\, Postdoctoral Associate in Environmental Anthropology at the University of Maryland.   As always\, our films are free and open to the public. \nIn COOKED: Survival By Zip Code\, Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand uses her signature serious-yet-quirky connect-the-dots style to take audiences from the deadly 1995 Chicago heat wave — in which 739 mostly black\, elderly\, and poor Chicagoans died during the course of one week– deep into one of our nation’s biggest growth industries: disaster preparedness. Along the way\, Helfand forges inextricable links between extreme weather\, extreme disparity\, and extreme racism\, daring to ask: what if a zip code was just a routing number and not a life-or-death sentence?\nKIPCOR  (316) 284-5217 kipcor@bethelsk.edu

SUMMARY:KIPCOR Film Series: Dawnland
DESCRIPTION:We will fire up the projector on Sunday\, November 17 at 3:00 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium to screen the film\, “Dawnland.” \nABOUT THE FILM\n“My foster mother told me … she would save me from being Penobscot.” \nFor most of the 20th century\, government agents systematically forced Native American children from their homes and placed them with white families. As recently as the 1970’s\, one in four Native children nationwide were living in non-Native foster care\, adoptive homes\, or boarding schools. Many children experienced devastating emotional and physical harm by adults who mistreated them and tried to erase their cultural identity. \nNow\, for the first time\, they are being asked to share their stories. \nIn Maine\, a historic investigation—the first government-sanctioned truth and reconciliation commission (TRC) in the United States—begins a bold journey. For over two years\, Native and non-Native commissioners travel across Maine. They gather testimony and bear witness to the devastating impact of the state’s child welfare practices on families in Maliseet\, Micmac\, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal communities. Collectively\, these tribes make up the Wabanaki people. \nThe feature-length documentary Dawnland follows the TRC to contemporary Wabanaki communities to witness intimate\, sacred moments of truth-telling and healing. With exclusive access to this groundbreaking process and never-before-seen footage\, the film reveals the untold narrative of Indigenous child removal in the United States. \nThe TRC discovers that state power continues to be used to break up Wabanaki families\, threatening the very existence of the Wabanaki people. Can they right this wrong and turn around a broken child welfare system? Dawnland foregrounds the immense challenges that this commission faces as they work toward truth\, reconciliation\, and the survival of all Indigenous peoples. \nLiving at the easternmost edge of Turtle Island\, the Wabanaki people are the first to see the new day’s light. If harmony and justice begin in the east\, as some prophesize\, surely the TRC is a sign of this beginning. \nAs always\, we invite you to stay after the film for a provocative discussion.  Our post-film discussion on November 17 will be led by Dan Wildcat\, Professor of Indigenous and American Indian Studies\, Haskell Indian Nations University. \nSee you at the movies!
