SUMMARY:EVENT CANCELLED - October 13th Peace Lecture with Dr. Fania Davis
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe regret that Dr. Davis is unable to join us for the Peace Lecture Series as planned.  Please stay tuned for information on our celebration of the 50th Annual Peace Lecture Series in Spring of 2023.\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Davis\nFania E. Davis is a leading international voice on the intersections of racial and restorative justice. She is a long-time social justice activist\, civil rights trial attorney\, author\, and educator with a PhD in Indigenous Knowledge. Davis came of age in Birmingham\, Alabama during the social ferment of the civil rights era. These formative years\, particularly the murder of two close childhood friends in the 1963 Sunday School bombing\, crystallized within Fania an enduring commitment to social transformation. For the next decades\, she was active in the Civil Rights\, Black liberation\, women’s\, prisoners’\, peace\, anti-racial violence\, economic justice and anti-apartheid movements. Apprenticing with African indigenous healers catalyzed Fania’s search for a healing justice\, ultimately leading her to serve as Founding Director of Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth and Co-Founding Board Member of the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice.  Her numerous honors include the Lifetime Achievement award for excellence in Restorative Justice\, the Black Feminist Shapeshifters and Waymakers’ award\, the Tikkun (Repair the World) award\, the Ella Jo Baker Human Rights award\, and the Ebony POWER 100 award.  The Los Angeles Times named her a New Civil Rights Leader of the 21st Century. She recently received the Open Society Foundation’s Justice Rising Award recognizing 16 Black  movement leaders working towards racial justice in the United States.  Among Davis’ publications is the Little Book of Race and Restorative Justice: Black Lives\, Justice\, and U.S. Social Transformation.  Davis\, who resides in Oakland\, CA.\, writes and speaks internationally on restorative justice\, racial justice\, truth processes and indigeneity. She is a mother\, grandmother\, dancer\, meditator\, and a yoga\, qigong and African spirituality practitioner.

DESCRIPTION:The KIPCOR 2021-22 Film Series continues in November.\n\nPlease join us on Sunday\, November 14 at 2:00 p.m. to view the film\,\n“A Home Called Nebraska.”\n \nWe will once again screen this film live and in-person in Krehbiel Auditorium in the Luyken Fine Arts Center on the campus of Bethel College in North Newton.  As always\, our films are free and open to the public.\n\n\n“A Home Called Nebraska” tells the story of our midwestern neighbors to the north and the welcome\, acceptance and friendship they extended to refugees in 2020 – all during a time of national anxiety and open bigotry.  Thanks to many Nebraskans’ generosity\, these refugees who escaped war\, torture and persecution continue to thrive and succeed today.\n\n\nAs always\, we hope you can stay after the film for a discussion with fellow audience members.  The discussion will be led by Emily Haverkamp\, a Wichita Immigration and Asylum attorney.  Ms. Haverkamp\, a University of Kansas graduate\, lived in Malaysia as a child where her mother screened Vietnamese refugees for the U.S. government.  She also served in the U.S. Peace Corps before launching her career as an immigration attorney\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE that we will continue to follow Bethel College’s COVID-19 guidelines\, which currently require everyone to wear masks indoors for groups of 10 or more\, regardless of vaccination status.\n\n\nSee you at the movies in November!!

DESCRIPTION:Join us as the 2020-2021 KIPCOR Film Series continues in a virtual format.  Our November film is “Cooked: Survival by Zip Code\,” a multiple-award winning documentary that focuses on the deadly 1995 Chicago heat wave to illustrate how minorities and low-income citizens suffer the most negative impact from natural disasters.  The film is an indictment of our nation’s disaster preparedness\, and forges a link between extreme weather\, extreme disparity\, and extreme racism.\n\nYOU MUST VIEW THIS FILM BETWEEN NOV. 8 AND NOV. 14 using this link and password:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to view film:  https://vimeopro.com/bullfrogfilms/kipcor-cooked\n\n\n\n\n\nPassword:  KC30p0\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Sunday\, November 15 at 2:00 p.m.\, KIPCOR will host a virtual discussion of the film on Zoom with Christy Miller Hesed\, a Hesston resident and Postdoctoral Associate in Environmental Anthropology at the University of Maryland.  Click here to register for the November 15 audience discussion and we will send you the Zoom information on the afternoon of November 13.
