DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends of KIPCOR\, \nThank you so much for your support over the past couple of months since we announced Sarah Smarsh as our 2020 Spring Peace Lecturer. This fundraiser is part of the 35th anniversary celebration for the Kansas Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (KIPCOR). \nSarah Smarsh is an author\, speaker\, and journalist who focuses on socioeconomic class and rural America. Her book Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth\, an instant New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the National Book Award\, examines economic inequality through her upbringing among the working poor on a Kansas farm. \nSarah has reported on socioeconomic class for The Guardian\, the New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Harper’s\, and many other publications. Heartland was named a “best of 2018” by NPR\, Fresh Air\, the Boston Globe\, Amazon\, Buzzfeed\, Barnes and Noble\, and Publishers Weekly. In addition to being short-listed for the National Book Award\, Heartland was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize\, the Lukas Prize\, the Indie Choice Award\, and an Audie Award for Smarsh’s reading of audiobook. Actor-producer Sarah Jessica Parker selected the title for the American Library Association’s Book Club Central. \nSarah is a regular political commentator in national media and has spoken internationally on poverty\, rural issues\, and cultural divides at venues ranging from small-town libraries to Sydney Opera House. Sarah was recently a Fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on Media\, Politics and Public Policy. In 2019\, Sarah released a podcast entitled The Homecomers\, which focuses on how a national blind spot toward rural and working-class America is driving misleading headlines\, broken politics\, and dangerous fissures in our social fabric. The podcast showcases stories of people who\, as residents or advocates\, remain committed to their complex\, embattled homes. \nBy ninth grade\, Sarah attended eight southern-Kansas schools\, ranging from a 2\,000-student high school to a two-room prairie schoolhouse. Now\, she holds an MFA in nonfiction writing from Columbia University\, as well as degrees in journalism and English from the University of Kansas. A former English professor and grant-writer for social service agencies\, Sarah aims for all of her work to have a backbone of civic responsibility. \nGeneral Admission tickets are available in advance online for $15 from Eventbrite HERE.   \nBethel College students will be admitted free of charge when they present a Bethel Student ID at the door of the event.  No prior rservations are necessary.   \nStudents from other ACCK colleges will be admitted for $10 by presenting their college ID at the door.  These tickets can not be purchased in advance. \nGeneral Admission tickets will be available at the door for $20. \nThis event is co-sponsored by KMUW.

SUMMARY:This film is postponed until Fall 2020. KIPCOR Film Series: Cooked: Survival by Zip Code
DESCRIPTION:Note that this film is postponed until Fall 2020.   \n  \nKIPCOR 2019-2020 Film Series Presents:  Cooked: Survival by Zip Code \nWe’ll fire up the KIPCOR projector again on Sunday\, April 19\, at 2:00 PM for our next film\, “Cooked:  Survival by Zip Code”. \nJoin us in Krehbiel Auditorium in the Luyken Fine Arts Center on the campus of Bethel College in North Newton as we watch the film and discuss it and its ramifications with Dr. Christy Miller Hesed\, Postdoctoral Associate in Environmental Anthropology at the University of Maryland.   As always\, our films are free and open to the public. \nIn COOKED: Survival By Zip Code\, Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand uses her signature serious-yet-quirky connect-the-dots style to take audiences from the deadly 1995 Chicago heat wave — in which 739 mostly black\, elderly\, and poor Chicagoans died during the course of one week– deep into one of our nation’s biggest growth industries: disaster preparedness. Along the way\, Helfand forges inextricable links between extreme weather\, extreme disparity\, and extreme racism\, daring to ask: what if a zip code was just a routing number and not a life-or-death sentence?\nKIPCOR  (316) 284-5217 kipcor@bethelsk.edu

\n  \nRegister NOW so that you will be included in the November 4 emailing of the Zoom link. \nRegister Now\n  \nAlthough this event is FREE\, it IS still a fundraiser.  In order to donate to KIPCOR for this\, or any other\, event\, please click below.  Choose the amount of your donation and then (and this is important)\, find the downward pointing arrow at the end of the phrase “Bethel College Fund (Current Fund)” and click on the arrow and SELECT KIPCOR FROM THE DROPDOWN MENU. \nDONATE NOW\n  \nIf you would like to order your own copy of Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth you can do so by going to the website of our local bookstore\,\nFaith and Life Bookstore\, HERE.\nBe sure to fill out the “comment” area of the purchase form with the name of the person to whom the book should be dedicated.  Faith and Life will place a bookplate with your dedication and Sarah’s signature in your book and have the book at the store for you to pick up or\, if you live out of the area\, ship the book to you.   The deadline for ordering books is Noon on the day of the event\, November 5\, 2020. \nPeople who order a book will be invited to a private\, exclusive “Question and Answer” zoom call with Sarah after the main event.  Invitations to this exclusive Q&A time will be sent in the early afternoon of November 5\, the day of the event.\n  \n  \nIf you would like to be a named sponsor for this event\, or would like to suggest a potential sponsor\, please contact KIPCOR Director\, Sheryl Wilson\, at (316) 284-5881\, or swilson@bethelks.edu. \n  \nThis event is co-sponsored by Faith and Life Bookstore and by KMUW. \n  \nSponsors \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:EVENT CANCELLED - October 13th Peace Lecture with Dr. Fania Davis
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe regret that Dr. Davis is unable to join us for the Peace Lecture Series as planned.  Please stay tuned for information on our celebration of the 50th Annual Peace Lecture Series in Spring of 2023.\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Davis\nFania E. Davis is a leading international voice on the intersections of racial and restorative justice. She is a long-time social justice activist\, civil rights trial attorney\, author\, and educator with a PhD in Indigenous Knowledge. Davis came of age in Birmingham\, Alabama during the social ferment of the civil rights era. These formative years\, particularly the murder of two close childhood friends in the 1963 Sunday School bombing\, crystallized within Fania an enduring commitment to social transformation. For the next decades\, she was active in the Civil Rights\, Black liberation\, women’s\, prisoners’\, peace\, anti-racial violence\, economic justice and anti-apartheid movements. Apprenticing with African indigenous healers catalyzed Fania’s search for a healing justice\, ultimately leading her to serve as Founding Director of Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth and Co-Founding Board Member of the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice.  Her numerous honors include the Lifetime Achievement award for excellence in Restorative Justice\, the Black Feminist Shapeshifters and Waymakers’ award\, the Tikkun (Repair the World) award\, the Ella Jo Baker Human Rights award\, and the Ebony POWER 100 award.  The Los Angeles Times named her a New Civil Rights Leader of the 21st Century. She recently received the Open Society Foundation’s Justice Rising Award recognizing 16 Black  movement leaders working towards racial justice in the United States.  Among Davis’ publications is the Little Book of Race and Restorative Justice: Black Lives\, Justice\, and U.S. Social Transformation.  Davis\, who resides in Oakland\, CA.\, writes and speaks internationally on restorative justice\, racial justice\, truth processes and indigeneity. She is a mother\, grandmother\, dancer\, meditator\, and a yoga\, qigong and African spirituality practitioner.
